Grant Application Instructions

Step 1: Verify Grantee Eligibility
Before submitting a grant request, you must first verify that your grantee is eligible to receive City funds. Please complete both steps below:
Check Business Status
Visit the California Secretary of State’s Business Search site:
https://businesssearch.sos.ca.govEnsure the organization is listed and marked as "ACTIVE".
Check Charitable Trust Status
Visit the California Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts:
http://rct.doj.ca.gov/Verification/Web/Search.aspx?facility=YIf the organization does not appear, that is acceptable.
If the organization is listed, it must be marked as "CURRENT".
⚠️ If a grantee is delinquent on either site, they must contact the appropriate State agency to resolve the issue before the City can issue any grant funding.
Types of Grants
There are two primary types of grants available:
1. SAP (Special Appropriation Program) Grants
Eligible organizations:
Nonprofits
Unincorporated associations (e.g., neighborhood associations)
Government entities (e.g., County of Santa Clara)
Purpose: Must be Educational, Recreational, or Cultural in nature.
2. Council Grants
Eligible organizations:
Same as SAP grants: nonprofits, unincorporated associations, or government entities serving San José residents or businesses.
Purpose:
Council grants may support a broader range of services, including those not falling under educational, recreational, or cultural categories.
