East Alma Avenue Safety Improvement Project

The City’s Department of Transportation is moving forward with safety improvements on East Alma Avenue, between Monterey Road and Senter Road, as part of the City’s 2026 pavement maintenance program. This project extends the safety upgrades completed on West Alma Avenue in 2025.

What’s Changing

  • Repaved surface with refreshed striping

  • New protected bike lanes and new buffered bike lanes

  • Upgraded crosswalks at First Street/Monterey Road and South 10th Street

  • Travel lanes reduced from four to two, with the center turn lane retained, to make room for these safety upgrades

Timeline

  • Planning, design, and community outreach: Spring/Summer 2026

  • Paving and striping construction: Fall 2026

  • Protected bikeway installation: Spring 2027

DOT has already begun outreach with stakeholders along the corridor, including SJSU’s South Campus operations team, Tech CU Arena/Sharks Ice, and the San José Giants, with additional community meetings continuing this fall. My office is working closely with DOT throughout this process and will share updates as the project moves forward.
