Senter Road Earmark Project

Senter Road already has low-cost “quick-build” safety features from an earlier project. This state-funded earmark project makes those improvements permanent along Senter Road between Story Road and Monterey Road, for people walking, biking, riding transit, and driving.

Full Project Scope

  • New traffic signal at Senter Road and Balfour Drive

  • Roadway and pedestrian-scale LED lighting

  • Concrete-separated protected bike lanes

  • Transit priority signals, bus boarding islands, shelters, and benches

  • Median islands with trees

  • Enhanced crosswalks with flashing beacons and radar speed signs

Where Things Stand

  • Complete — enhanced crosswalks and radar speed signs (September to late fall 2025)

  • In progress — Balfour signal, Tully intersection improvements, lighting, bikeways, and medians (started April 2026, expected through January 2027)

  • Upcoming — intersection improvements at Singleton, Lewis, Needles, and San Gregorio, delivered via the Bus Accelerated Infrastructure (BusAID) program (expected fall 2027)

While Construction Is Underway

  • Temporary lane closures are in place to keep the worksite safe, and are lifted whenever possible.

  • U-turns are restricted at Senter Road and Tully Road until the intersection work is complete.

  • Signal timing at Senter Road and Tully Road is limited after construction damaged the signal’s communication equipment; replacement is underway.

Funded by a state earmark (Assembly Bill 178, signed by Governor Newsom on June 30, 2022), with additional transit funding secured through the Bus Accelerated Infrastructure (BusAID) and Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP).
